Allen Lee Cook

Allen Lee Cook, 84, of Woodstock, husband of Margaret Wright Cook, died Thursday, November 08, 2012 at the Skyline Terrace Nursing Home in Woodstock. He was born on May 6, 1928 in St. Luke, Virginia to the late Jessie Fredrick Cook and Clara Coffman Cook.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, a daughter, Karla Cook Thomas and her husband, Dennis W. Thomas of Maurertown, a step-grandson, Matthew A. Frye, and a brother, Lester Wayne Cook and friend Joan Harrold of Edinburg; and many other relatives. Allen was preceded in death by his brother, Berlyn Fredrick Cook.

Allen was a faithful member and Trustee of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. He was also a volunteer member of the Woodstock Fire Department, Company 12 for many years. He worked as a huckster (in the DC area) in his younger days, was an accomplished carpenter with Shepherd’s Tile and Hardware, and helped as an assistant at the Pangle Auction Center.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. at  Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock. The Reverend Peter Mitchell will officiate. The family will receive family and friends at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 127 E. High Street in Woodstock after the service or anytime at the Cook home.
Pallbearers will be Freddy Helsley, Phil Hottel, Terry Kibler, Joe Lehnen, Larry Richard, and Richard (Buck) Shrum. Honorary pallbearers will be Elvin Walker, the Woodstock Fire Department, and the Walker’s Cash Store Friday morning group.
The Cook family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at the Skyline Terrace Nursing Home in Woodstock for their attentiveness and loving care for Allen during his time there.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 235 S. Main Street, Woodstock, VA or the Woodstock Fire Department P.O. Box 176, Woodstock, VA.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9-5 on Saturday.

    Brenda and I are deeply saddened by the passage of a good friend and cousin in Allen. A more skilled and precise man I’ve never known (probably got that from his Dad). I personally never knew him to be overly aggravated with anyone and he seemed steady in all that he did.
