Bernice Martin of Woodstock, Virginia, died December 21, 2014.
Mrs. Martin was born in Mathias, West Virginia, April 30, 1923. She was the youngest and last living of eight brothers and sisters. Her parents were Barbara and Grover Jenkins. Her family moved to the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, when she was six years old and she grew up near the Shenandoah River. She lived in various places and returned to Woodstock, VA, in 2013.
She was educated in Woodstock High School, Strayer’s College, Columbia Tech (art), Stenotype Institute, George Washington University, Berlitz Language School, N.Y, and Northern VA Community College (art classes). She took many years of piano lessons.
She worked as a switchboard operator, secretary, and in real estate with her husband, broker for Martin Real Estate.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Johnny Mitchell, and second husband, Fay E. Martin. She is survived by her son, Gerald L. Mitchell; daughters, Bernice Joy Brunk and Jean M. Cunningham; and stepdaughter, Melaney Roundtree. Her grandchildren are Leslie Mitchell; Michael and Tammy Roundtree; and Mark, Matthew, Michael, and Elizabeth Cunningham.
A memorial service will be held February 15 at 3:00 pm at Bethel Lutheran Church in Edinburg, VA. Friends and family are welcome to go to her home afterward to look at photos and reminisce.
