Our beloved Channing Yorke Armell of Basye, departed this earthly world on June 1 after a long couragous battle with cancer. Born September 2, 1952 in Woodstock Virginia, Channing was a loving and caring woman devoted to her husband of thirty-nine years, Richard A. Armell, three children, Lorrie Saar (Jeffersonville, IN), Lawrence Armell (Basye, VA), and Teale McCleaf (Cupertino, CA). Channing leaves seven grandsons, one granddaughter, and three great grandchildren. Preceded in death were her mother Mary Francis Canaday (nee Craig) and her stepfather Aubrey F. Canaday. Surviving is her father Ollie Russell Hansberger, Jr., also surviving are her sister Wendy G. Higgins (Annapolis, MD), brother Jeffery Hanser (Rancho Sante Fe, CA), brother Timothy Hansberger (Ellenton, FL), and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Channing was a valued member of the University of Maryland family where she worked for almost two decades, before she moved to the Shenandoah Valley in 1990. During her 25 years in the Valley, Channing became one of the most loved and admired members of the Bryce Resort Community, as both a member and employee. Channing’s gentle heart, commitment to family/community, and love of children, led to her career as a doula, where she helped countless mothers and newborns. Channing also provided marketing services for Shenandoah Place, and assisted her husband at Creekside Realty. Channing was an outstanding golfer, winning may awards including the Bryce Resort Women’s Club Championship. Che played competitive softball in both Maryland and Virginia, was an avid Texas Hold ‘Em poker player, and loved vacationing in Aruba, earning Honorary Citizenship. Channing’s infectious personality and incredible sense of humor touched the lives of so many. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m., at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Basye, with the Rev. David Drebes officiating. Burial will follow at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
