On the evening of December 16, Charlotte Morrison Combs gracefully passed into Eternal Life surrounded by family. Charlotte was born on July 16, 1928 in Woodstock, VA to Harold and Lois Morrison who preceded her. She is survived by her brother Harold ‘Buddy’ Morrison and wife Kitty. Charlotte married Ralph H. Combs on April 26, 1948 and they shared 65 years together. They experienced wonderful adventures together with their four children and their spouses, Sandra and Peter Comar of Woodstock, Julie and David Coffman of Charlottesville, Ralph, Jr. and Maripeg Combs of Winchester and Bryan and Patty Combs of Mt. Jackson. ‘Grandmama’ will be missed by her 8 grandchildren, Ryan and Mark Coffman; Will and Sam Combs, Lynn Miskovic; Emily, Michael and Lindsay Combs; and one great grandchild Taliesen Combs.
Charlotte was a 1945 graduate of Woodstock High School and a graduate of the Palmer Business School and served as Treasurer of Woodstock Garage. Family was always very important to Charlotte as she was a storybook mother and homemaker who devoted her life to her husband and children. The family spent many hours enjoying car rides seeing the countryside and learning about the Old Dominion’s rich history and important sites where our Nation began. She never missed her children’s plays, musicals, school activities and could always be found in the stands cheering on her children and the rest of the Central Falcons. She not only gave her time to her family, but was a loyal and faithful lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where she served as a teacher for both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, Co-Chair of the Nursery Committee and any other capacity in which she was asked. Every year at the beginning of school she could be found at the Woodstock Elementary School doing eye screening tests for the Lions Club.
Charlotte enjoyed travelling, knitting and was a talented seamstress who crafted many of her family’s clothes including doll clothes and cherished wedding dresses for her daughters. She and Ralph explored America and other parts of the world together. She was a delightful Southern Lady always greeting people with a smile and a warm welcome.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday December 23 at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Emanuel Lutheran Church on High St. in Woodstock with the Rev. Nathaniel Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Following the service there will be fellowship and light refreshments at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Ave. Suite B Winchester, VA 22601 noting “Charlotte Combs Memorial” on memo line.
