Floyd Alvin “Al” Miller

Floyd Alvin “Al” Miller, 77, of Woodstock, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.  The funeral will be held Thursday, July 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock with burial following at Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock. A reception will follow at Woodstock Moose Lodge.

Mr. Miller was born March 2, 1937 in Shenandoah County, son of the late Forrest Benjamin Miller Sr. and Violet Sine Miller.  He retired from Lear Corporation in July 2007 after a 24 year career with the company.  In his retirement years he was a very active member and volunteer at Woodstock Moose Lodge #575 and a member of the Breakfast Club at McDonalds.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Anita Cook Miller and “adopted brother” Sonny Huffman.

Al is survived by his son, Rick A. Miller and wife Tracy of Edinburg; sister, Marcella Georgann Miller Bowers of Woodstock; brother, Forrest “Ben” Miller Jr. of Stuarts Draft; half-brother, Douglas Miller of Ohio and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Al was a special kind of guy who loved his family and community dearly and always had a smile and kind word for everyone he encountered.  He will be fondly remembered for the many years of selling vegetables with long-time friend Doug French, whom he spoke of often after Doug’s passing.  Al enjoyed keeping busy by working with his tractor, mowing grass, cutting firewood and also found time to relax by sitting on his front porch visiting with friends and neighbors.    He could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to whoever was in need.

Pallbearers will be Bill Shrum, Kenny Hausenfluck, Robert Mowery, Donald Clem, John Crisman, Richard Lambert, Ted Rhea and Bill Grabill.

Honorary pallbearers will be Millson French and Orrin French.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Woodstock Moose Lodge Building Fund, 152 Moose Road, Woodstock, VA 22664; Woodstock Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 221, Woodstock, VA 22664; Woodstock Fire Department, P.O. Box 176, Woodstock, VA 22664.

6 Condolences to Floyd Alvin “Al” Miller

  1. Lisa Reedy says:

Rick and Tracy, so sorry to hear about the passing of Al. I thought of Al as a close friend that I enjoyed learning from in the many years I knew him. We met at Lear in 1987. I cleaned his house once a week for him and Judy. I enjoyed helping Al clean the houses he would buy to rent. We often walked track together. Al was always there for me including attending my wedding in 1992 and being there when my mother passed in 2011. He helped me with the decision making process in auctioning my mother house off. We always kept in touch all these years and just recently enjoyed each other company watching the cars go by on his front porch. He was a wonderful man that I looked up to growing up. I will truly miss him and will be praying for u all. Sincerely Lisa Reedy.

  2. Denise Phostole says:

Rick and Tracy please accept our sincerest condolences on the passing of your father Al. Our mom, Paulette, lived next to him and he was the kindest neighbor she ever had. They shared a birthday – March 2. He was always there for her whenever she needed a helping hand. She spent many afternoons on your dad’s front porch watching the world go by. He was a smart and gentle man, who always knew the right thing to say, and I never heard him say an unkind word about anybody. May you find solace in your memories.

  3. Annette Jadus says:

Rick and Tracy- I echo my sister’s message to you both, and your extended family. Your father was a kind, thoughtful man with a great deal of patience and understanding toward our mother, (Paulette). She could never have hoped for a better neighbor or friend than she found in your father for her many years in Woodstock. I am deeply sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Annette Jadus

  4. Ray Steinly says:

The world lost a good man and a great friend. Al may have been the friendliest gentleman I ever met. I enjoyed every minute I ever spent talking with him, which were much too few due to so many different priorities, but I’m glad he was a small part of my life. May he rest in peace and may God bless his family.

  5. Bret Kennedy says:
