Gordon R. Tyler

Gordon R. Tyler, 86, of Basye, VA, passed away with his wife by his side on January 28, 2015 at Life Care Center of New Market.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was born in Honolulu, HI on July 8, 1928 to Arthur Robert Tyler and Bertha Becker Tyler.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he went to live with his aunt, uncle, and cousins in Monroe, WI since his parents had essential jobs on the Island.

When the war ended, he returned to Honolulu and graduated from Punahou School in 1946. He attended the University of the South in Sewanee, TN where he earned a degree in history.

During the Korean Wan, her served as a first lieutenant in the Army Artillery.

Following the war, he worked as a Department of the Army civilian in the intelligence field.

He resided in Alexandria, VA, but over the years his work took him to a variety of places overseas, including Japan and Vietnam.

He married Anne Bradley Pierson on August 9, 1969 and they resided together in Alexandria, VA, though they also spent several years in Panama and Germany.

After his retirement in 1989, they moved to Bryce Resort in Basye, VA. There he volunteered extensively in the community library, food pantry, and Lions Club, as well as building houses for Habitat for Humanity.

Gordon had a wide variety of interests, including skiing, reading, and listening to classical music. He spoke and read Japanese and Vietnamese. He was an avid pilot, both of powered aircraft and sailplanes, and loved to fly with the Sky Bryce Flying Club.

He was known for his wonderful sense of humor.

He is survived by his loving wife; his stepsons, Roger, Bradley and Mitchell Pierson; his daughter, Susan Ezell and husband, Jeffrey; two grandsons, Daniel and Benjamin Pierson; and three granddaughters, Michelle Pierson and Nicole and Alyssa Ezell.
