Grace Arlene Barrick Minnick

Grace Arlene Barrick Minnick of Edinburg, VA passed away at her home October 3, 2013.  She was born June 24, 1928 to the late Thomas Earl, Jr. and Ida Wakeman Barrick.

Mrs. Minnick graduated from Edinburg High School, Class of 1945 and was a 1947 graduate of Bridgewater College with a degree in Bookkeeping.  After college, Grace worked at the Church of the Brethren Relief Center in New Windsor, MD.  Upon returning to the area in 1949, she spent the next 14 years working as a bookkeeper for H & H Motor Co. and then Windsor Knit Co.  Grace and her husband, Melvin, opened and operated H&R Block Tax Franchises in Woodstock and Strasburg from 1968 through 1979.   That same year, she then opened Minnick Tax & Bookkeeping Service out of her home, joined by her son, Kevin Minnick in 1992.  After 51 years of working in tax preparation, Mrs. Minnick retired in 2011.  For many years, she has been affectionately referred to as the “Tax Lady”.  Also, following her husband’s death in 1980, Mrs. Minnick managed Edinburg Printing Company, currently operated by son, Kevin.

Grace was a lifetime resident of the Wakeman’s Grove area and was an active member of Wakeman’s Grove Church of the Brethren where she served in various ministries and committees.  She was an avid supporter of the Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center, serving as treasurer for the organization for a number of years.

Grace Minnick loved music and took great joy in playing guitar and singing harmony.   She particularly enjoyed the years she, her husband and two sons sang together as the Minnick Family Quartet from 1971 through 1975.

Mrs. Minnick was married for 25 years to Melvin “Pete” Floyd Minnick, who predeceased her in 1980.  She is also predeceased by brother, Glenn Barrick and sister, Frances Gochenour.  She is survived by children: Kevin & wife, Vicki; Dean & wife, Terry, both of Edinburg; four grandsons:  Aaron Minnick of Harrisonburg, Jordan & wife Vanesa of Richmond, Stephen & wife, Lindsay of Edinburg, Anthony Minnick of Edinburg; one granddaughter: Tiffany Williams & husband, Billy of Mt. Jackson; and two great-grandchildren:  Ayla Williams and Callen Minnick.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center or to Wakeman’s Grove Church of the Brethren.

Overcoming lifelong physical challenges, Grace will long be remembered by all who knew her as an amazing example of perseverance, strength, courage, faith, and compassion  mixed with a wonderful sense of humor.
