Harry Samuel Rudy, age 97, died peacefully at Greenfield of Woodstock on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Mr. Rudy was born on January 21, 1917 to Bettie and Glenn Rudy. Mr. Rudy was the last of eight brothers and sisters and was raised on Muhlenberg Street in Woodstock. He attended Woodstock High School and Massanutten Military Academy. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Kathryn Snyder.
Mr. Rudy enjoyed many years as a grocer. He and Freddie Frye opened the Ideal Food Market on Main Street in Woodstock. In the mid-1960s, he and Mr. Frye opened the Ideal IGA Foodliner on High Street.
In 1985, Mr. Rudy married Gloris Morgan and they shared 28 happy years of marriage.
An active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and on the Church Council, Mr. Rudy took his faith seriously. He served on the Woodstock Town Council and was a docent at the Woodstock Museum.
Mr. Rudy is survived by one son, Harry “Reggie” Rudy, two grandchildren, Evan and Ariel Rudy, and seven step-granddaughters: Erin, Kate, Annie, Christina, Melinda, Michelle and Sara. He is also survived by his step-sons and their families: Walt and Lloydine Morgan of Woodstock, Bob and Kathi Morgan of Lynchburg, Virginia, Jim and Becky Morgan of Eagle, Colorado and Steve and Ellen Morgan of Roanoke, Virginia.
Mr. Rudy loved people and especially enjoyed traveling with Gloris. He was kind-hearted and generous.
Family night will be held at Dellinger’s Funeral Home in Woodstock on Friday, June 20 from 6:00 til 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Nate Robinson at Emanuel Lutheran, 127 E. High Street, Woodstock on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock with a reception afterward in the social hall of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Woodstock.
Pallbearers will be John Bushong, Evan Rudy, Kevin Gutshall, Rob Keller, Bill Didawick and Mark Irvin.
