Helen Marie Shuler Freeman, 92 of New Market passed away on July 10, 2014 at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Freeman was born on March 27, 1922, in Shenandoah, Virginia to the late Elmer Lee and Lena Gochenour Shuler. Preceding her in death was her husband William Howard Freeman, son Howard Lee Freeman, brothers, Robert C. Shuler, Elmer Lee (Tom) Shuler, Jr., Edward O. Shuler, sisters, Louise Painter, Marguerite Burner, Florine Kibler, and Mary Frances Bull.
She is survived by her sister Annabelle Harner, sisters-in-laws, Alice Shuler and Margaret Shuler.
Helen and Bill were blessed with five children, Billie (James) Campbell of New Market, Deitra (Richard) Downin of Harrisonburg, Beverly Kline of Waynesboro, and Thomas Freeman of New Market. Daughter-in-law Linda Hinegardner and husband Michael of Broadway, and foster son John Henry.
Grandchildren are James (Leslie) Campbell, Kristine (Blake) Rohrer, Amy (Dale) Ritchie, Stacy (Kelly) Freeman, Gina (Greg) Yost, Ginger (Craig) Baur, Jill (Randy) Cosner, Anita (John) Sites, Tony (Shanna) Kline, and Marshall Freeman. Foster grandchildren are Brenda, Lisa, and Dennis Henry.
Great grandchildren are Daniel, Anna, and Sarah Rohrer, Adam and Kayla Dove, Evan and Morgan Sites, Brandon and Bryce Freeman, Tyler, Keely, and Lindy Yost, Gunnar and Isla Baur, Cash and Mea Cosner, Haley, Marshall, Tyler, and Kaleb Freeman.
Helen and Bill raised chinchillas early in their marriage. They studied floral design in Washington D.C. They opened the Evergreen Fernery in New Market where they raised tropical plants as well as spring bedding flowers. In 1956 they opened the Evergreen Florist in Broadway where they raised many cut flowers and plants. She loved her flower shop and enjoyed serving the Broadway and surrounding communities.
Her passions, besides her family, were flowers and her garden club. After retirement they moved back to New Market where she was known as the “Flower Lady”. She was a charter member of the Cohee Garden Club in New Market. She was a member for 52 years and was honored with the National Garden Club pin. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed her trips to Europe.
Family will meet with friends at Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market on Saturday evening, July 12 from 7 to 8 P.M. The burial will be private at the Emanuel Church Cemetery in New Market. A Memorial Service will be at the Broadway Presbyterian Church, 107 E. Lee Street, Broadway, Virginia on Sunday, July 13 at 3:30 P.M.
