James J. A. Leary

James J. A. Leary, 90 of Basye died peacefully on Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. He had suffered with diabetes for decades, and his health was related to complications associated with this disease.

Mr. Leary was born Oct. 22, 1919. He was the son of the late James and Emma Leary. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Rita Jameson Leary, who died in 2008. He is survived by a son, Dr. James J. Leary, a daughter-in-law Sandra Will Leary, and two grandsons David Sherman Leary and Brian Marshall Leary.

He graduated from the Federal Aviation School and Newark College of Engineering. He was a World War II veteran who served in the 104th Infantry Regiment of the 26 Division. He was wounded in January 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the 104th Infantry Veterans Association, the Disabled Veterans Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He lived his entire working life in northern New Jersey  where he was employed at Wallace & Tiernan, Westinghouse, and Ballantine Brewery, but most of his professional life was at the Newark pigments facility of E.I. Du Pont.

A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate having donations made to the Orkney Springs Fire & Rescue Squad: P.O. Box 374, Basye, VA 22810

    Jim was a terrific and caring friend of our family. He was smart, a warm, loyal and generous friend to each of us and was a tremedous help both in offering assistence with small problems or in difficult times. We had wonderful times together, too many to list but those memories we hold we will hold on to forever.
