John H. Stauff

John H. Stauff, 87, of Harrisonburg and former resident of New Market, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 18, 2016 at Sentara RMH Medical Center. He was born July 12, 1929 in Washington, DC, son of the late John H. Stauff, Sr. and Beulah Baker Stauff of Manassas, VA.

He served two years in the Army Medical Core and was stationed in an office at Walter Reed Hospital interviewing and discharging wounded soldiers. During World War II, John, a high school student, was a photographer for the Manassas Journal Newspaper. He, along with some of his friends, helped the newspaper until the war ended.

John was a licensed funeral director working at his family owned funeral home in Manassas, VA.

He helped establish, and was president of, the Mt. Jackson Chamber of Commerce. He was also past president of the Mt. Jackson Lions Club, and a member of the New Market Rotary Club. He helped establish and was a life member of the American Legion – Post 166 in New Market.

Along with his father-in-law, Norman Kelley, he established the Kelley and Stauff Insurance Agency in Mt. Jackson. It was later named the Stauff Insurance Agency.

John was a member of the Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market, serving on the church council and various other committees.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia Kelley Stauff; a son, John Kelley Stauff and wife, Cindy Andes Stauff; and grandson, Andrew Kelley Stauff.

The Rev. Jeffrey Sonafelt will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market.

Friends may sign the register book at Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reformation Lutheran Church, Box 896, New Market, VA 22844.
