Joyce Marie Cooley, 83 of Woodstock passed away Friday, October 31, 2014 in Woodstock, VA. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Emanuel Lutheran Church followed by burial at Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock, VA. Pastor Nate Robinson will officiate.
Mrs. Cooley was born June 24, 1931 in Anawalt, WV, daughter of the late Harrison Reed and Phosie Hopkins Shepherd. She married Charles Richard “Dick” Cooley in 1955. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock and a 55-year member, and past President (1964-1965), of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 199. She retired in 1995 after working over 26 years at Aileen, Inc. as a switchboard operator.
Joyce had an insatiable passion for tennis and loved playing with friends even into her 70’s. She loved music, reading, playing hand-bells at local churches, volunteering at the Woodstock Clothes Closet, and was active in many church activities. She frequently was seen about town with her beloved running mate/cousin Mary Jo Sweeney or her sister-in-law Betty Rhodes.
Joyce is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles “Rick” and Rose Cooley of California, MD; five grandchildren, Charles “Ricky” Cooley III, Jenna Cooley, Nicholas Cooley, Catherine Cooley, and Nathan Cooley; and step-granddaughter Ryann Anthony Morrison. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Cooley Sr.; a daughter, Donna Anthony; a son, Terry Cooley; her sisters, Bernice Shepherd and Ferne Arnold; and her brothers, Bill Shepherd and Harry Shepherd, Jr.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night at the funeral home from 6-7 P.M.
Pallbearers will be David Anthony, Pete Cameron, Rich Cooley, Ricky Cooley, Billy Pence, and James Rhodes. Honorary pallbearer is Nathan Cooley.
