Stanley Odell Dellinger, 85, of Strasburg, VA, peacefully passed away on Thursday, July, 2, 2015, at the Blue Ridge Hospice ICC unit in Winchester, VA.
Mr. Dellinger was born on March 17, 1930, the only child of Lewis and Gladys Polk Dellinger of Conicville, VA. Upon graduation from Triplett High School in 1947, he served with the US Army 45th Infantry Division in Korea along the 38th parallel.
After his discharge, he graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University) with a degree in education and began his teaching career as a math teacher in Falls Church, VA. He continued his education at George Washington University, receiving a Master’s Degree in Education Administration in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he became principal of Strasburg High School, and later, Secondary Supervisor for Shenandoah County Public Schools. He retired after 33 years of dedicated service. After retiring, he enjoyed many years of chauffeuring for AES Limousine Service in Winchester, VA.
Mr. Dellinger loved Strasburg, and rarely missed a high school sporting event from the time he was principal until his illness 2 years ago. He often shared stories about his tenure as teacher, principal, and administrator. He shaped the lives of so many people including his family, friends, and countless Strasburg graduates. He will be missed and long remembered.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 61 years, Pauline Richard Dellinger; son, David Dellinger and his wife, Stella, of Winter Haven, FL; and daughter, Debra Funkhouser and her husband, James, of Strasburg. Also surviving are the pride and joy of his life, his grandchildren, Daniel and Rachel Funkhouser, and Nicole Dellinger.
Mr. Dellinger was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg. Arrangements are being handled by Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock, VA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may by made to the scholarship fund at St. Pauls Lutheran church, 156 West Washington Street, Strasburg,VA 2257.
The family will receive friends on Monday July 6, 2015 from 6-8 PM at the Dellinger Funeral Home, 157 N. Main Street, Woodstock, VA. Funeral services will be held Tuesday July 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the same location with graveside rites immediately following at the Riverview Cemetery at Strasburg, VA.
