Susan Eileen Lineweaver Mitchell passed on June 30, 2011 surrounded by family after a long and brave struggle with cancer.
Susan was born in the Cedar Creek Valley of the Shenandoah at her home on April 13, 1948, to Frank Gilbert Lineweaver, Sr. and Katherine Lee Clowser. She was the last of five children. Paternal grandparents were William Riley Lineweaver and Clara Naomi McIlwee of Star Tannery, Virginia and maternal grandparents were Carroll and Sarah Belle Clowser of Mountain Falls.
Susan is survived by brothers, Donald Ray and wife Joyce of Star Tannery, Virginia, William Edward and wife Anna Mae of Alexandria, and Frankie and wife Connie of Manassas, Virginia; and sister, Ailon Holingsworth of Woodstock, Virginia.
Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews as well as beloved pets predeceased her. They will all meet again in heaven.
Susan graduated in 1966 from Central High School. She met her husband of 40+ years at the Shenandoah County Fair in 1962. They married in 1968. They traveled with his job and made many friends but it was always back to her mountains and valley that they returned. She worked for the Shenandoah Telephone Company in the 60s and different jobs over the years, including Virginia Savings Bank, where she worked with good friends and had lots of fun.
Susan volunteered for the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the Woodstock Fire Department Auxiliary where she so enjoyed the people and the work.
Susan is survived by her husband, Jerry Mitchell; daughter, Leslie Mitchell-Watson, of whom she is so proud, and Leslie’s husband Alan Watson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly and were there with her during her battle with cancer.
A family night will be held on Sunday evening July 3, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Dellinger Funeral Home, 159 North Main Street, Woodstock, Virginia 22664.
Susan’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 127 East High Street, Woodstock, Virginia 22664. Reverend Kenn Nilsen will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock.
In lieu of flowers, Susan requested that memorials be made to Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, P. O. Box 746, Woodstock, Virginia 22664 to help clean up the Shenandoah and its tributaries for future enjoyment of the river and your health. Memorials can also be made in Susan’s name to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Suite #405, Winchester, Virginia 22601, a truly wonderful organization.
