Thomas Franklin Cooley

Thomas Franklin Cooley, 81, of Woodstock, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at his home.  The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock.  Reverend Freddie Helsley will officiate.  Burial, with military honors by Woodstock American Legion Post #199 and Edinburg VFW #2447, will follow in St. Luke Cemetery.

Mr. Cooley was born July 31, 1932 in Edinburg, son of the late Elmer Lee and Edna Fogle Cooley.  He served in the Korean War (2nd Infantry Division U. S. Army) and achieved rank of Sergeant, and retired as a mechanic from Goodyear in Front Royal.  He was a member of St. Luke Brethren Church where he sang in the choir, member and  chaplain of Edinburg VFW Post #2447, chaplain of Woodstock American Legion Post #199 and District American Legion chaplain.  He was a 40 year member and Past President of St. Luke –Fairview Ruritan Club and member of the Wednesday Prayer Group at Ben Franklin. 

Tom is survived by his wife, Arlene Racey Cooley whom he married on April 6, 1957; two sons, Michael Thomas Cooley and wife Holly of Woodstock and Keith Patrick Cooley and wife Shaney of Bunker Hill, WV; two sisters, Virginia Shrum of Woodstock and Mildred Wakeman of Edinburg; twin brother, Donald Lee Cooley of Leesburg; three grandsons, Nathan, Benjamin and Aaron Cooley and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Sibert.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Cooley, Benjamin Cooley, Aaron Cooley, Robert Kibler Jr., Steve Coffman, Ralph Wakeman.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke Brethren Church Building Fund, 3250 Back Road, Woodstock, VA 22664.

Tom was an avid trail rider and horseman and helped provide military honors for many Shenandoah County veterans.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
