Carol Cunius Obituary

Carol Lee Caldwell Cunius died on May 24, 2021, at Shenandoah Hospital from Covid-19 pneumonia.
A joint Memorial Service will be held on July 10, 2021, at 1 p.m. for Carol and her son, Scott Alexander Cunius, who tragically also died of Covid-19 a few days after her passing. Please encourage your loved ones to get vaccinated!
The daughter of William Bruce Caldwell, an attorney, and Frances Cook Caldwell, she was born on March 13, 1934, in Buffalo, NY. Her Aunt Doris Cook introduced Carol to the love of her life, William Richards Cunius Jr., while both were already engaged. A true "love at first sight" meeting, they married after a short courtship of two months and enjoyed 60 years of blissful marriage until her husband died in October 2017.
A graduate of the University of Florida, Carol was a registered nurse who worked for the CIA for 25 years, which also employed her husband and son, and took her to tours in Germany and Australia. Carol also served as a nurse for Camp Asbury at Silver Lake, New York, a favorite haunt of her family.
Carol and Bill retired to Bryce Resort in Basye, VA, where she made many friends and was a devoted member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church in Mt. Jackson, VA.
For about a decade during the summers, Carol and Bill managed the United Methodist Missionary House on Lake Chautauqua in NY, the former summer cottage of the famous Studebaker carriage and car family.
Besides being an active member of her church, Carol liked to quilt, swim, and go antiquing. She loved to laugh and could be described as feisty and independent in her thinking. She was a Washington football fan and said her knowledge of sports was one of the things that attracted Bill to her.
Carol is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Lee Newberry, of Poolesville, MD, and four grandchildren: Jonathan Newberry, Hannah Cunius Capra, Kate Cunius, and Will Cunius. She also has two great grandchildren: John and Charlotte Cunius.
Carol truly fought "the good fight" for her faith, for her family, and for her country. She is reunited in heaven with her great love Bill whose passing she never got over, her parents, her brother, the Rev. William Caldwell, and all of the other friends and family who will surely welcome her with open arms. In lieu of flowers, Carol's family encourages you to donate to one of Carol's favorite charities: Silver Lake Institute, PO Box 20, Silver Lake, NY 14549; Mt. Hermon Methodist Church, 3821 Orkney Grade, Mt. Jackson, VA 22842; or Luke's Backpack, a program of the Shenandoah Valley Lutheran Ministry that provides a backpack of food on Fridays for children and families. Carol always kept her loose change and often asked family to empty their pockets and their purses into her Luke's Backpack jar. There will be a jar at her service, or you can send donations to Luke's Backpack, Shenandoah Valley Lutheran Ministries, Inc., PO Box 132, Toms Brook, VA 22660.
