Roy's blessed earthly sojourn of 96 years began in Wausau, Wisconsin on December 27, 1918, the youngest of six children of Emma Tiller and Edward Sommerfeldt. As a young man during the depression he found it necessary to leave his hometown and travel to Washington DC where he was employed by the US Weather Bureau.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Joan Baugh, whom he met while serving in the Army in England during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Washington DC where he worked for NOAA until his retirement in 1973. He thoroughly enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and extensive travel and time spent with his family, especially visits from his granddaughters and their friends.
His Faith journey began with his baptism at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. He was a charter member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Falls Church where he served in various capacities until his move to Toms Brook in 1990. It was his firm belief that his Savior Jesus Christ paid the debt for his sins reconciling him to his Eternal Father who called him home on December 9, 2015.
He is survived by Janet, his wife of 38 years, son, Neil (Kate) Sommerfeldt, granddaughters Anna Sommerfeldt, Emily Sommerfeldt, Susan Keeler (Andy), step granddaughter Rebecca Thornock, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Memorial gifts may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice 333 West Cork St. # 405 Winchester, Virginia 22601, Shenandoah County Free Clinic 124 Valley Vista Dr. Woodstock, Virginia 22664, or to a charity of choice.
