Sarah Velma (Tyrrell) Carrol of Maurertown, Virginia passed away peacefully on January 26, 2023 from natural causes. She was born June 18, 1927 to the late Teresa Orndorff Tyrrell and William James Tyrrell at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC.
Sarah graduated from Trinity High School in Georgetown, DC in 1945. She met and married Arthur L Carrol in 1946.
Sarah worked for the US Government from 1946 until 1987 in many capacities, including the Department of Defense, Department of Health Services, the US Post Office, the Naval Department, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
Sarah moved to the Shenandoah Valley back to her childhood roots in 1983 to enjoy her retirement. She had built a home on the land settled by her grandparents on what is now Van Buren Rd in Sugar Hill (address is Maurertown). It was discovered by the surveyor (who was also a local historian), that the property had been surveyed by George Washington and Lord Fairfax. As a child, Sarah attended the one room school house for 3 years which was located on Sugar Hill Rd. It is no longer standing, but she advocated to save the school’s outhouse which is now situated at the Historic Wickham House in Woodstock.
Sarah loved her mountain community and was interested and involved with the history of this part of the Valley. She volunteered at the Woodstock Library, was a docent at the Woodstock Museum, Treasurer of the Cedar Creek Valley Central Community Center, and Treasurer of the Sugar Hill Cemetery. She also volunteered for the Census Bureau and worked the polls for elections for many years. She was a member of the Woodstock Women of the Moose Chapter 1865.
Sarah never met a stranger and her home was open to one and all. She welcomed everyone with open arms and with a twinkle in her Irish eyes. She was proud of her Irish/German heritage. She loved to dance and to entertain. She was a tiny but feisty woman. In her 80’s she used a shovel to kill a rabid raccoon that was attacking her dog. She also warded off bears on 3 different occasions by singing a certain Cherokee song to them! She was a character!
Survivors include her children, Theresa “Terry” Brown of Roswell, GA (Frank), Arthur “Tykie” Carrol, Jr of Woodstock, VA, Constance Carrol, Sarah Christina “Chrissy” Warner of Monrovia, MD, (Chuck); grandchildren, Ian Brown, Allison Hobbs (Ben), Brooke Brown, Amy Greene (Michael), Sara Beth Prendeville (Michael), and Deme Warner; great grandchildren, Cameron Brown, Cora Rae Warner, Nathanael Greene, Eleanor Greene, Abigail Greene, Hazel Washington, Arthur Prendeville and Frank Prendeville; brother, William Tyrrell (Rita).
