Anna Coffman Obituary

Anna Madden Coffman, affectionately known as "Miss Anna," of New Market, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at Shenandoah Place of New Market.

She was born in New Market on April 6, 1922, to the late Luther Lee Madden and Sarah Catherine Pickering and was a lifelong resident of New Market.

Anna was a graduate of New Market High School Class of 1939 and attended Madison College.

On Dec. 4, 1947, she married Allen Driver Coffman of Timberville, who preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1973. Anna worked as his secretary/bookkeeper for his livestock buying business and was a homemaker. Anna was a devoted member of the Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market and was a member of the choir for 70 years. She was an original member of the Social Ministry Committee and Thursday Fellowship and also served on the Church Council.

Anna was also active in the community; she was a charter member of the Cohee Garden Club, served on the board of Luther Crest and the American Lung Association of Virginia. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the New Market High School Association.

Over the years, she enjoyed traveling, visiting many foreign countries and was proud of the fact that she had visited all 50 states.

She enjoyed her flower gardens and making arrangements.

Anna loved cats and always had one or more feline companions.

Anna is survived by a son, Allen (Chip) D. Coffman Jr. of New Market, and special friend of Chip, Doris Whitmore, two grandsons, Lee Allen Coffman and Grant Joseph Coffman, of Houston. She was predeceased by a son, Joseph Lee Coffman, two sisters and a brother, Evelyn M. Royster, Grace McCarthy and James E. Madden.

Pastors Jeffrey Sonafelt and George Sims will conduct a memorial service at Reformation Lutheran Church at noon on Friday, July 20, 2018.

The casket will be closed, and burial will be private.

Visitation with the family will follow after the service at the Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Reformation Lutheran Church or the Reformation Lutheran Church Memorial Scholarship Fund, both at P.O. Box 896, New Market, VA 22844. Contributions may also be made to the New Market Fire and Rescue at 9771 S. Congress St., New Market, VA 22844.
