Carolyn Jean Guinn, 53, of Columbia, MD formerly of Maurertown, VA passed away peacefully at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD on December 22, 2023, after a long courageous battle with leukemia.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 11 A.M. at Dellinger Funeral Home, 159 N. Main St. Woodstock, VA 22664 with Pastor Sonya Williams-Giersch officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock then join the family for food and fellowship at the American Legion, 411 S Muhlenberg St, Woodstock.
Carolyn was born April 22, 1970, in Washington, DC.
She graduated from Strasburg High School in 1988 where she excelled in academics, basketball. In 1992, she graduated with honors from Mary Washington University where she received a BSB (Bachelors of Science in Biology). In 1995 she earned an ASN degree in nursing from Shenandoah University. In 1996 she received her BSN degree from Shenandoah University. In 2021 she completed her certificate in Patient Safety and Quality from Georgetown University. Carolyn began her nursing career working on the Skilled Nursing Unit at Life Care Center in New Market, VA. From there she worked as an ER nurse at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. She worked at Winchester Medical Center for many years as a Cardiology Case Manager, Director of the Renal Unit and Magnet Program Director. After leaving Winchester Medical Center, she became the Magnet Program Director at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She truly enjoyed the challenges and responsibilities of her job. Helping people and making the lives of nurses better were passions of Carolyn’s. In her free time she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, traveling, listening to music, seeing live music shows, dancing, karaoke and spending time with her fur baby.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Homer Wade and Hazel Mauldwin Guinn and her maternal grandparents Edgar Franklin and Annie Funkhouser Shrum.
She is survived by her loving and caring partner who held her hand through it all, Mark Jardim of Columbia, MD; her parents, Tom Guinn, Sr. (Jackie) of Woodstock and Lorraine Gail Guinn of Maurertown; one son, Hunter Whirley (Alisha) of SC; two grandchildren, Harper and Asher Whirley; one sister, Cheryl Guinn Reynolds (Allen) of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Tom Guinn, Jr (Kim) of Woodstock and Bruce Gibbons of TX; two nephews, Parker Reynolds (Savannah) of KY, Clay Guinn (Cassidy) of Woodstock; three very special cousins, Susan Guinn, Kim Shrum Cooper and Debbie Guinn Harbaugh; two lifelong best friends, Stacie Rinker and Teresa Shillinburg, and her spoiled fur baby, Annie.
The family will receive friends Friday, December 29 from 6:00-8:00 at Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock, VA.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL and the UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MARLENE AND STEWART GREENEBAUM COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER.
