Fleta Shipe Helsley, 87 of Maurertown, widow of Claude Arthur Helsley, died at Consulate Health Care on Friday, April 30, 2010, surrounded by her family.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, 11:00 AM at the Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock by Rev. Richard Craver and Rev. Bill Garber. Burial will follow at Maurertown Cemetery.
Mrs. Helsley was born November 30, 1922 at Edinburg, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Harry Lee and Vallie Hollar Shipe. She graduated from Edinburg High School in 1939. She worked at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and retired from Aileen, working in the cutting room over 16 years. Mrs. Helsley was a member of Maurertown Brethren Church for over 70 years, was Treasurer of the Maurertown Citizens Club for over 35 years.
After she retired, her two greatest passions were baking and giving the prepared food away to family and friends. She always had chocolate chip cookies for anyone that visited and was glad to give them some for the trip home. She also loved to watch basketball games, both men's and women's, and knew about every player on the ACC roster of most teams up until the last few years. She also loved to listen to country music and their shows.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Chesleigh Shipe, Alger Shipe, Hilda Barricks, and Frances Fadely.
Mrs. Helsley is survived by two sons, Larry L. Helsley and wife, Robin of Edinburg and Conrad A. Helsley, and wife, Esther of Strasburg; grandchildren, Erik Helsley and wife, Meg of Glen Allen,VA. Neil Helsley and wife, Trish of Vienna, VA. Marsha Chapman and husband, Todd of Roanoke VA.; 6 great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Sager and her husband, Eugene of Kingsport, TN.
The family will receive friends Monday May 3rd at the Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock from 6 to 8 PM.
Pallbearers will be Gary Lambert, Gary Shipe, Bob Shipe, Ray Fadely, Ron Shrum, Erik Helsley, Neil Helsley, and Todd Chapman.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Maurertown Brethren Church or the Maurertown Citizens Club.
