Jean Mellon Wood, 94, formally of Manassas, Va., Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., and New Market, Va., passed away on September 17, 2023, at Bon Secours Community Hospice in Richmond, Va. Jean was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 3, 1929, to the late William Harvey Mellon and Emma Catherine Mellon (Hayes). Jean attended Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) and was a homemaker. She married her husband of 61 years, John D. Wood, Jr. in 1950. Jean and John moved to Stonewall Road, in Manassas in 1960 where John started his construction company. Stonewall Road was a single lane dirt and gravel road back then, and they were the fourth house on the road. Her quote, when she first saw the property, as the house was being built was “where in the world are you taking me?” She made the best of it, contributed, and always welcomed her sons’ friends into their home and treated them like her own.
Jean was passionate about baseball. Jean was a major time contributor for the Manassas Baseball league and Manassas Babe Ruth Baseball League in the 1960s and rarely missed an Osbourn High School game from 1967 through 1970. Additionally, Jean followed the George Mason University games from 1971 to 1974 as her son Bruce played during those years. She was an avid golfer and tennis player. She won the Girls Baltimore City High School tennis championship. The family joined Evergreen Country Club in 1972 and she enjoyed the Lady’s golf groups and competitive events there until 1986 when they moved to Murrell’s Inlet, SC as her husband John retired as a General Contractor (Caudle Construction) in Manassas. She also enjoyed bowling, knitting, following the Washington Redskins and Bridgewater College Football, her son David’s alma mater, attending most home games in the early 2000’s.
Jean was a member of the Broadway Presbyterian Church, on N. Main Street, Broadway, Va.
Surviving are her son Bruce M. Wood and wife Carol of Moseley, Va., her son David C. Wood and wife Judy of Haymarket, VA., her grandchildren - Rebecca Wood (and Kelly Helling) of Aurora, CO., Samantha Juron (husband Vince) of Charlotte, NC., Karly Kelly (husband Sean) of Charlotte, NC., Kyle Wood (wife Joanna) of Tampa, Florida, and Kelsey Wood of St. Louis, MO., four great-grandchildren, and step-grandson Michael Team and his wife Amanda of Manakin Sabot, Va. and their children Ellery and Gavin Team.
